The Patricia Gang

I found some amazing friends at the Patricia Place... their love will always remain with me...

KUMI - Room 308

Kumi-chen... the lawyer from Japan... She is such an excellent woman, she is all beauty and grace... even her jalal was jamal to me... To be honest about it, I miss her immensely and it difficult to speak about it... When I open my mouth on this subject, I tend to get all poetic and stop making sense to all but myself...

She treated us to such amazing Japanese food...

Kumi-chen buying her supply of apples for the carrot-apple juice she drinks every morning, the secret of her eternal youth...

One of those many, many dinners that the Patricia Gang

Kumi with her Japanese friends at Pike Place Market

SHAH SAHB (Room 309)

Shah sahb was, effectively, my host at Patricia. I came to Seattle without knowing where I would be staying... Then, as I was walking in the UW gardens, I came across him... He was kind enough to invite me to Patricia... I visited the place and liked it... and that was the beginning of an eventful year at Patricia... I cannot describe how kind and gracious he was to me, throughout... and I can hardly ever repay him for it...

He is a scholar of comparative constitutional law and amongst his many distinctions is his great skill at cooking...

ASIF JAAN (Room 303)

Asif-jaan is a bit picture shy... He is an extremely well-read, educated Iranian engineer... he was always kind, frequently fed us Persian lunches and drove us around in his car, among other things...

KHAN SAHIB (Room 209)

Mulla Shamshad Pasarlay or Khan sahib... A graduate of the shariah faculty... a budding scholar of Afghan constitution law and political history... Fellow admirer of Professor Lombardi...And my soccer coach... He is a lot of love and a lot of fun... He is the longest-standing Afghan scholar in residence at Particia and the locus of the community there...

He was a fellow doodh-patti fan

MUHAMMAD JAAN (Room 101)

My (not so early morning!) breakfast buddy... He has such an innocent smile... He was always kind and helpful... He has a sparkling intelligence and a keen interest in living the life of the mind... It was a comfort to know that on the other side of the corridor, there was a room whose door was always open to me, which was full of interesting books, redolent with the fragrence of food, echoing with Persian songs and hearty smiles...

Heidi (Room 102)

In my early day, Heidi was the person I would most frequently encounter in the kitchen while getting stuff ready for tea time... We ended up sharing tea... She was a college senior back then... A good, devoted Christian, she read passages from the Bible to me, upon my request...  an excellent loving person.. She has certain hints of being a majzoob...

There were other friends too at Partricia, and I remember them all....
